THE WHISKY HOUSE LANGATUN
Langatun Single Malt Whisky is produced by hand following an ancient family tradition. With the Tour & Tastings offer you can discover the secrets of whisky distilling. A guided tour of the distillery in the historic Kornhaus, built in 1616, explains in detail how whisky is made. What ingredients go into whisky? How does the very strong beer produced at the end of the fermentation process ever turn into whisky? What effect does the brewing liquor have on the whisky’s character later on? What impact does the choice of cask have? And come to that: How does a whisky from Langenthal make a name for itself in the great wide world of whisky? At the end of the tour, take part in a tasting session and try some LANGATUN whiskies. (Englisch WHISKY-TOURS on request.)

Thunstetten Castle – Living Castle event
A unique combination of traditional heritage and charisma that turns a visit to Thunstetten Castle into a very special experience. A short introduction highlights the life and work of Bernese patrician Hieronymus von Erlach, who had his summer residence built on high land in Thunstetten in 1715 in the French baroque style of Louis XIV. Afterwards, you are free to explore the impressive rooms, the remarkable grounds and the wedding pavilion. Site managers, historians and a contemporary witness – a member of the last family to own Thunstetten Castle – are available at certain points to answer individual questions. They tell stories of long-gone days, of living and growing up in the castle and of the challenges of running a castle nowadays.

Langenthal: Town planning and architecture
This guided tour is specifically aimed at architects, town planners, civic master builders, engineers etc. The tour shows how the Langete, the region’s biggest river, has affected and shaped the development of Langenthal from the very beginning – and continues to do so to this day. On entering Langenthal, the Langete flows through the town, sometimes hidden underground and sometimes visible, next to and under the houses and streets. Flooding in the town was a common occurrence in the past, as evidenced by the high pavements in the town centre. It was not until a flood relief tunnel was built in 1992 that the town was made safe. The course of the Langete is an extraordinary example of town planning and architecture, involving both historic buildings and modern developments, and an understanding of urban consolidation and renovation. langenthal.ch

Places to visit

Oberaargau – an area of outstanding countryside full of variety and surprises. Oberaargau is a region of villages, valleys and hills, forests and meadows – a paradise for walkers, hikers and cyclists. At the eastern point of the canton of Bern, it shares borders with the cantons of Solothurn, Aargau and Lucerne, and stretches from the Jura Mountains down into the Aare Valley and up again to the Ahorn, one of the foothills of the Napf.

  • Kunsthaus Langenthal

The Kunsthaus art gallery in Langenthal is located in the blue Choufhüsi building, a protected monument with a tower and four historic clocks, one on each side, dating from around 1890. Four exhibitions each year reflect new themes and trends in contemporary art. The focus is on contemporary Swiss art, but international perspectives are included, depending on the theme of the exhibition. There are frequent links to Langenthal as a location.

Every exhibition is accompanied by a selected programme of activities with courses for children and young people and events for adults.

  • Thunstetten Castle

The former summer residence of Bernese patrician Hieronymus von Erlach on the high ground above Langenthal offers breath-taking views. This beautiful manor house was built by the famous Parisian architect Joseph Abeille between 1713 and 1715 in the French baroque style of Louis XIV. The underlying concept for the entire estate – buildings and gardens – is complete symmetry: a hint of Versailles on Oberaargau farmland!

The castle can be hired for private and corporate events and the pavilion in the castle park is a very popular venue for civil weddings. The castle park is open to the public.

  • Whisky House Aarwangen

Langatun Whisky – SWISS PREMIUM SPIRITS – has moved its distillery from Langenthal to the historic Kornhaus in Aarwangen, which dates from 1616. Langatun Single Malt Whisky and other premium spirits are now made by hand following an old family tradition on the site opposite Aarwangen Castle. THE WHISKY HOUSE shows visitors where the alcohol in whisky comes from and why whisky is a golden brown colour and not clear. Visitors can learn how whisky is made through guided tours or seminars. They can even have a go at distilling themselves and can smell and feel the different types of grain in the Cereal box.

  • St. Urban’s Abbey

The most important cultural site in the Oberaargau region lies – strictly speaking – in the canton of Lucerne. The Cistercian monastery of St. Urban was founded in 1194 by monks from Lützel Abbey in Alsace, with support from the barons of Oberaargau. Over the course of its life, the monastery developed into the religious, intellectual, ruling and economic centre of the border region between the cantons of Bern, Solothurn, Aargau and Lucerne. In the first half of the 18th century, the Cistercians commissioned Franz Beer, a master builder from Vorarlberg, to completely redesign and rebuild the monastery. Today, the former monastery is one of the most impressive examples of baroque and Cistercian architecture and culture in Switzerland. The baroque monastery church with its high altar and choir stalls is regarded as an international place of interest.

  • Water-meadows

Water-meadows are now a rare form of cultivated landscape of national importance. The fertile, rich green water-meadows form a distinctive swathe of countryside of unrivalled beauty and provide a habitat for many rare plant and animal species. Oberaargau is home to Switzerland’s last preserved water-meadows. They can be found in the valley bottoms of the Oenz, Langete, Pfaffneren and Rot and are the last remnants of a form of land use that was once widespread in central Switzerland, involving grass cultivation and a highly developed irrigation system dating back to the 13th century.

The panorama panel on the observation tower shows 150 mountain peaks. The Hohwacht can be reached on foot via attractive hiking routes, which are also suitable for electric bikes. Access by car is also possible (car park 100 m away). The Waldhaus Hochwacht Restaurant is open on Sundays from April to October (Sunday brunch) and can be opened for groups by arrangement.
